Every day, people face challenges related to crime, justice and the rule of law. These issues affect people’s lives in different ways, depending on their country and region. Addressing them requires individuals to both be aware of these challenges and equipped with effective means to respond to them.
In 2015, United Nations Member States gathered in Doha, Qatar for the 13th Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. In the outcome document of the Congress, known as the Doha Declaration, Member States committed to integrating crime prevention, criminal justice and other rule of law aspects into education systems.
To implement this decision, the Education for Justice (E4J) initiative was developed by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). E4J has the objective of creating and disseminating education materials on the issues of crime prevention, criminal justice and other rule of law aspects at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels worldwide.
Beyond educating young people about the global challenges to the rule of law, E4J also seeks to inspire them to be part of their solution and become positive agents of change in their societies. This goal is only attainable by giving youth a say in matters related to crime, justice and the rule of law. Therefore, E4J has been actively engaging youth in the development of its tools.
To give young people the chance to come up with their own ideas to educate their peers on the rule of law using technology, E4J conducted a series of hackathons in 2017:
• Johannesburg, South Africa: 27 - 29 July 2017
• La Paz, Bolivia: 1 - 3 September 2017
• Jakarta, Indonesia: 20 - 22 October 2017
The three winning teams, together with a local team from the United States, which was supported by The Social Engineering Project, were invited to a global Hackathon4Justice held from 9 - 11 July 2018 in Mountain View, California, in partnership with Symantec and Africa Teen Geeks.
Our mission is to engage the younger generation in technology and the fight for justice.
You can expect to be wowed by the innovative ideas and technical skills of participants.
